If you can notice there is a fort between the island which was built in 8thh century AD. Back in the past, the island helped the fort in many ways. Like during low tide, the fort was accessible to numbers of pilgrims who visited the place and at the time of high tide, it saved the castle from the invaders. Because of its strategic location, Mont Saint-Michel remained untouched during the Hundred Years’ War even though the English tried their best to take over the commune.
