This previously undiscovered DNA, identified as USR1, dates back at least 20,000 years and possibly up to 34,000 years.
According to Eske Willerslev, a professor at the University of Copenhagen and co-author of the study, they are the oldest known Native Americans. “It changes our understanding of the timing of events that formed the genetics of Native Americans,” Willerslev told CNN Health.
